We know we’re not there yet, but by running PIXEL alongside Windows, Mac OS, and the established desktop GNU/Linux distros, we can more easily see where our weak points are, and work to fix them. We don’t just want to create the best desktop environment for the Raspberry Pi: we want to create the best desktop environment, period. And bringing PIXEL to the PC and Mac keeps us honest.There is no learning curve, and no need to tweak her schoolwork to run on two subtly different operating systems. She can move back and forth between her computing class or after-school club and home, using exactly the same productivity software and programming tools, in exactly the same desktop environment. A school can now run PIXEL on its existing installed base of PCs, just as a student can run PIXEL on her Raspberry Pi at home.At first attempt, I could not make it work, but it is on my later “to-do” list.Why do we think this is worth doing? Two reasons: Another unsolved issue is the MacBook webcam. I noticed something funny though, when on the Live version, it will recognize the WiFi adapter but when I installed it… oops! I can’t remember, but I did a few searches and found a way to activate it. Next was **Manjaro XFCE** - clean interface, very likable and it would come with two options for office suite: 1. Bodhi as all other distros took some time to load, but was very fast playing around. Next in line was **Bodhi**, a lightweight distro so I said, this might be it. I had a few more distros to try, why not give them a try. I was happy to have the WiFi adapter recognized. I thought I have found the right one, but then I noticed things that were not working properly. Faster loading time than the others, under 1min 30 sec. #INSTALL SLAX ON USB MAC MAC OS#I went for **Elementary OS** - since it looked more like a Mac OS - I thought the developer would have worked more to be used on a Mac and I would have much more luck. **Trisquel** was somehow fast, but not that appealing. #INSTALL SLAX ON USB MAC PORTABLE#Copy them into a USB, run a file and you got yourself a bootable / portable Linux OS. ![]() I would like to consider it for really low-end laptops and I like the fact that it would run like just copy and paste files. #INSTALL SLAX ON USB MAC UPDATE#I had to use a wired connection to update and somehow the system would recognize the WiFi adapter and I could connect to the Internet wirelessly. Another issue was my WiFi was not immediately recognized. ![]() Lubuntu and Peppermint were a bit better compared to the other distros, but not quite there. Other choices were **Lubuntu**, **Fedora**, **Linuxlite**, **Sparkylinux**, **Peppermint**. It took long time to boot, it was a heavy load and click response was slow. I love Mint! So during installation, I wiped completely the Leopard OSX and installed Mint. a 4 GB USB stick - ( ) (Create bootable USB) - ( ) (Create bootable USB) - ( ) (Create bootable USB, some additional options) *Note*: I just through the names, no particular order here. One main thing in common: booting into Linux, takes some time about 2 minutes, which is a lot compared to a MacBook booting to MacOS or a PC booting into Windows or Linux.Īt first, I was thinking… what the hell, it seems it’s not even loading, but later I found out that, this boot delay thing was common when trying Linux on a MacBook.ġ. I also wanted the system to run as smoothly as possible. I didn’t want to deal with configuration or finding which apps would work with them. I wanted a distro that I could use right out of the box. The good thing about Linux - they come in all different colors. #INSTALL SLAX ON USB MAC INSTALL#***The only solution was to install Linux.*** Windows 7 was not an option, because MS had its support terminated since January 14th. ![]()
